Ingredients needed for Oreo Truffles
These truffles are made with very basic 3 ingredients, and that’s the great thing about this recipe. Since I have made assorted truffles in two varieties, I have used two types of chocolate, but one would work just great.
The ingredients you’ll need are:
Oreos – This is the main ingredient of this recipe. You will need original (standard) Oreos for making these truffles, so don’t use the flavored or double-stuff Oreos. I used 28 sandwich cookies which made 16 large and about 28 small truffles.
Cream cheese – You can use any of your favorite cream cheese here, just make sure to use the full-fat cream cheese for the rich flavor and perfect texture. You can also use homemade cream cheese for this recipe.
Chocolate – For chocolate shells, you can use chocolate chips, candy melts, melting wafers, or real chocolate bars. I have used white and dark chocolate bars here.

Variation
-
Toppings - If you don’t want to coat truffles in chocolate then you can either roll them into cocoa. You can also coat them in sprinkles, or coconut flakes.
-
Nuts - If you like the nutty texture in your truffle, then you can also add your favorite chopped nuts to the cream cheese mixture. Chopped hazelnut and walnuts go well in this recipe.
-
Cream Cheese substitute - If you don’t want cream cheese in your truffles, then you can definitely make these oreo truffles without cream cheese. Instead of cream cheese add creamy or crunchy peanut butter to this mixture.
If overly sweet truffles are not a problem for you then you can also use Nutella or any chocolate hazelnut spread.
-
Booze - If you are a fan of boozy desserts, then you can always add 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite alcohol to the cookies and cream mixture.
-
Oreo Truffle pops: To make oreo truffle pops, insert a lollipop stick or a skewer stick into the ball and freeze for at least 3 hours. Then dip the balls into melted chocolate, shake off extra and set aside on a Silpat lined baking pan to dry.
When the chocolate is almost dry, add your favorite decoration and let them dry completely.
- Candies - You can also add some color texture and flavor to your oreo truffles by adding chopped candies or crushed candy canes.

Pro Tips & Tricks for Making Oreo Truffles
-
I didn’t add any flavorings to this truffle recipe. If you want you can add some vanilla extract for an extra flavor.
-
For melting chocolate you can either melt it in a double boiler (bain-marie) or you can also melt it in the microwave.
-
If you are planning for gifting, then this oreo truffles recipe can easily be doubled or tripled to make a bigger batch of homemade truffles.
-
If your truffle mixture is sticky and hard to shape, then scoop out the portions on a parchment paper-lined tray and freeze the mixture for 15- 20 minutes. After that, roll them into smooth balls and freeze again until the balls are firm.
-
Crushing cookies: If you don’t have a food processor, then you can smash cookies in a resealable bag using a rolling pin or a meat hammer. You can also use a hand mixer.
-
Don’t use the double stuff Oreos, they have too much filling. So your truffles would be overly sweet and won’t have a perfect biting texture.
-
Ditch the light cream cheese, and use regular full-fat cream cheese for making the best tasting rich truffles.
-
Make sure to chill and set the truffles before coating them in chocolate, or else the truffles would break apart into the chocolate.
-
The melted chocolate should be at room temperature before dipping the truffles.
-
I have dipped truffles in both white and dark chocolate. You can choose any of your favorite chocolate.
-
Melting chocolate: Sometimes melted chocolate is slightly thick, so you can use vegetable oil to thin it out to a dipping consistency. If your melted chocolate is too thick for coating, then you can add 1-2 teaspoons of neutral vegetable oil to the melted chocolate. Mix vigorously until everything is well combined. You will get a smooth coating.
-
For a colored chocolate coating, you can add a few drops of your favorite oil-based color to the melted white chocolate, and stir well until you get a uniform color.
-
If you are sprinkling truffles with cookie crumbs then make sure to sprinkle them immediately with crumbs as the shell will harden quickly and it won’t stick to chocolate.
