What is Chaat?

A Chaat or Chat is a very popular and delicious savory snack originating from Indian streets. This Indian street food is commonly served at roadside food carts or stalls. But nowadays it is also served in restaurants across the world.

The word ‘chaat’ (चाट) derives from Hindi language, which means tasting a delicacy. It comes from the word (chaat-na / चाटना) that means to lick, or licking fingers while eating.

Chaat is generally a blend of chutneys, sev (crispy fried noodles), onions, green chilies, cilantro, and powdered spices along with many other delights.

Although the base ingredients of each chaat are the same, yet every chaat is different from each other in taste and texture. Relishing each and every chaat gives you a different feel.

The taste and look of the same chaat vary from vendor to vendor. So even if you try the same kind of chaat at different places it would be quite different from one another. The reason is that every vendor has its own unique style of preparing chaat.

Some of the popular chaats are, Aloo Tikki Chaat, Chole Aloo Tikki Chaat, Palak Patta Chaat, Dahi Vada, Pani Puri, Bhel Puri, Kala Chana Chaat, Avocado Chaat, samosa chaat, and Bread Chaat.

What are Pro Tips, Tricks, and Variations to make chips chaat?

Tip 1. For this chips chaat, I didn’t want chips’ flavors to interfere with chaat flavorings. So I opted for Taffel’s salted chips but you can use any of your favorite chips.

Tip 2. For this chaat, I have only used one type of chips, but you can also use a combination of different chips. They would taste great.

Tip 3. Feel free to add any of your favorite salad vegetables to make them fiber-rich.

Tip 4. Some paneer cubes can also be added for a nice protein touch.

Tip 5. Lemon or lime juice adds a nice zing to this chaat, so it is highly recommended.

Tip 6. I generally use black salt in my chaats to bring out the flavors. However, if you don’t have black salt then you can replace it with pink salt or any other rock salt of your choice.

Tip 7. Keep the ingredients handy, and when you are planning to serve then only assemble the chips chaat. This way you will prevent it from turning soggy.

Tip 8. I used potato chips for making chips chaat, but you can also use tortilla chips, banana chips, kurkure, raffel, waffel, corn chips or any other chips you like.
